Evelyn Forde, former president of the Association of School and College Leaders, has highlighted the issue of systemic racism within the teaching profession, stating that opportunities for non-white teachers are “stacked against” them. Speaking at a WomenEd event, she emphasised the need to “unblock” the pipeline for applications to initial teacher training (ITT) from people of colour. Forde warned that without addressing these issues, the teaching profession will not be representative of society. Dr Kulvarn Atwal, headteacher and member of Headteachers’ Roundtable, echoed her concerns, noting the lack of diversity in governing bodies that affects the recruitment of leaders from ethnic minority backgrounds. Sam Henson from the National Governance Association acknowledged that 95% of governors and trustees are white, which undermines inclusivity in decision-making processes. A Department for Education spokesperson said it is working to ensure inclusivity in recruitment.
