Freemasons challenge police membership rules

Freemasons have launched legal action against the Metropolitan Police over a new requirement for officers to declare their membership. The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) argues that the policy is discriminatory and undermines the credibility of its members. Adrian Marsh, grand secretary of UGLE, said: “The decision by the Metropolitan Police casts an aura of mistrust over the entire Freemason community.” The police’s move follows recommendations from the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel report, which highlighted concerns about police impartiality linked to freemason membership.
