PSNI faces £240m data leak fallout

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is entering mediation to determine damages for up to 7,000 staff affected by a significant data leak. The potential compensation could reach £240m, following the accidental disclosure of employee details in a Freedom of Information request in 2023. The PSNI has accepted liability and aims to propose a “universal offer” during mediation, which would not be mandatory for staff to accept. Philip Gordon, a solicitor representing some affected individuals, said: “We welcome this development and look forward to engaging constructively.” The case is adjourned until December, with the PSNI facing a potential £750,000 fine from the Information Commissioners’ Office for its mishandling of data.
