A report from engineering and manufacturing trade body Make UK has found that only 53% of businesses believe the education system is capable of teaching the right skills needed for new workers in the sector – while a similar number of businesses said that finding workers with the right skills was the biggest obstacle to growth. Make UK’s executive director, Robert Halfon, has urged the government to unlock more than £1bn of money raised through the Apprenticeship Levy and Immigration Skills Charge to “turbocharge apprenticeships” and “give our manufacturers the skilled workforce to lead a skills transformation.”
